Mark Zuckerman

Who I Am

I am a lifelong musician whose work began early, with my first public performance at age eleven. My formal studies took me through Juilliard, the University of Michigan, Bard College, and Princeton University, where I worked with teachers including David Epstein, George B. Wilson, Elie Yarden, Milton Babbitt, and J. K. Randall.

I think of myself as a classicist: I care about structure and clarity as much as I do feeling and expressiveness.

What I Write

My catalog is intentionally broad. I’ve written a cappella choral music (including more than twenty arrangements of Yiddish songs, published in the Mark Zuckerman Yiddish Choral Series at ECS and by Transcontinental Music and Carl Fischer), virtuoso solo works, chamber music, band music, and music for orchestra and string orchestra.

I enjoy composing for both professional and amateur performers — especially student groups — and for all kinds of audiences, from modern music aficionados to children.

Who Performs My Work

My choral music has been performed internationally, including in The Netherlands, Great Britain, Canada, and Turkey, as well as throughout the United States. It has been performed and recorded by ensembles such as the Gregg Smith Singers, Chicago a Cappella, Volti, the Virtuoso Singers, the Goldene Keyt Singers, the New Yiddish Chorale, the Riverside Choral Society, Sharim v'Sharot, Choir Credo, the Rocky Mountain Chamber Choir, The Composers' Choir, and The Worker’s Circle Chorus.

My instrumental music has been performed and recorded by ensembles like: Tromba Mundi, the Rutgers University Wind Ensemble, the Holyoke Civic Symphony, the Rutgers University Symphony Band, the Southern Utah University Wind Symphony, the Trinity University Symphonic Wind Ensemble, the Raritan Valley Symphonic Band, the New Brunswick Chamber Orchestra, the Santa Cruz Chamber Orchestra, the Susquehanna Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Brass Ensemble, the Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra, Tales and Scales, the Nevsky String Quartet, Momenta, the Westchester Brass Quintet, the New Music Conflagration, Ensemble: Périphérie, Conundrum, the New Jersey Saxophone Quartet, and the Seattle Sinfonia;

...and by: Bart Feller, Patricia Sonego, Jack Hill and John Kamitsuka, Jean-Christophe Dobrzelewski, Guy Whatley, Ilya Itin, Peter Vinograde, František Brikcius, Jai Jeffryes, Erich Graf, Chester Brezniak, Luis Garcia-Renart, Zara Lawler, Mary Ellen Callahan, Margaret Kampmeier, Andrew White and the Frahm Lewis Piano Trio, and James Winn.

How I Work With Ensembles

I value clarity, collaboration, and responsiveness. Ensembles can expect clear notation, flexibility in adapting to their needs, and open communication throughout the rehearsal and performance process. I am comfortable writing for a wide range of skill levels and am always open to new projects and commissions.

Much of my recent inspiration comes from calls for scores — performers looking for music — and I’ve even gotten performances that way.

Recognition & Community

I am proud to have been awarded a New Jersey State Council on the Arts Fellowship. I believe strongly in advocating for the value of composers in society. I am a long-standing member of the American Composers Alliance and have served on its board. I am currently president of the Composers Guild of New Jersey, a non-profit that commissions New Jersey composers and supports the performance and recording of their work.
