Episodes

Episodes requires a three-manual organ with the capability of four preset couplings (corresponding to the dynamics p, mf, f,, and ff). The manuals should be set to be as distinct in tone quality as possible and should be abalnced at f so that (1) is the most prominent and (3) the least./ (1) should be more prominent that (2) at each level. At p, the level of greatest timbral differentiation, (1) should be predominently reedsw ans (2), flutes. The swell box, vibrato, chimes, and other gadgets should not be used.

Episodes is a set of variations on the opening statement. It features a comples rhythmic surface that blurs the distinction between harmony and embellishment.
